Prior to the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, CGTN reporter He Weiwei sat down with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo. He said his country has managed to double economic growth and reduce inflation in the past year, and that China's cooperation efforts have boosted the country's development.
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "Over the past one year and a half, we've been able to do - in my view - some quite remarkable things: First of all, growth rate of 3.6 percent that we've met, last year, the first year of our government, 8.5 percent rate of growth, and it is predicted that this year would be even higher. So the stabilizing economy, inflation coming down, and interest rate had begun to come down, we are witnessing a much stronger Ghanaian economy now than what was in place over a year ago."
"Today China is our biggest trading partner. And China is cooperating with the development of our economy across all ranges, in agriculture, in industrialization, especially in infrastructure development, in health and education, across all range of sectors of our economy."
"There are many examples of benefits to us from China. And on top of that, Chinese companies are proving to be very successful in their contribution to the development of our economy. So I am very hopeful that the relationship between Ghana and China is going to grow stronger and stronger in the years ahead."
HE WEIWEI "The summit of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum will be held in Beijing later this year, what accomplishments do you hope come out of the summit?
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "I think that's building on what happened in Johannesburg. We believe the cooperation with China can give us great value, China too, gets its benefits from the cooperation with Africa. And this mutuality between us and China, Africa and China is going to be consolidated when we come to Beijing. President Xi Jinping talked about the common destiny for mankind, I think it's a very positive statement for a country which today is now the second largest economy in the world."
HE WEIWEI "Mr. President, you just mentioned the Johannesburg Summit of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum, which was held in 2015. That's when the Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a "Top Ten Cooperation Program" between China and Africa, and China has provided 60 billion US dollars in funding for this purpose. How has this funding benefited your people?"
NANA AKUFO-ADDO GHANAIAN PRESIDENT "We've received some important benefits. First of all, some 2.3 billion dollars' worth of loans. I have come other, where which helped us once again in area of infrastructure, power and the education. We also received last sum of money which helps us revive some important fishing communities along our coast. So of the amount that was pledged in the summer of 2015 in Johannesburg, Ghana has this. Hope we can have some more, which I mean so far so good."
