Accompanying China’s fast development is the increasingly heated debate overseas surrounding China’s rise. Among the most dangerous confrontational issues is unquestionably Taiwan. Taiwan is the only area that has the serious potential of causing conflict. Both sides need to be cautious. To get some details, Dr. Robert Lawrence Kuhn spoke with Professor Zhu Chenghu, from the National Defense University of the PLA.

“If you look at the behavior of the United States, you can see that the United States is trying to make trouble there [Taiwan]. The US [seems to be] trying to betray what they had promised in the Three Communiques [1972, 1979, 1982]. For example, the new U.S. Defense Authorization Act — which encourages the selling of weapons to Taiwan, which encourages the port calls of U.S. vessels to Taiwan, which encourages the expansion of military exchanges between Taiwan and the United States and a lot of other similar things. Another problem area is the Travel Act, which enables officials of the U.S. and Taiwan to visit each other. This is again very, very disruptive of relations between China and the United States.”
