China says it will provide assistance to Sierra Leone after Monday’s devastating mudslide in the capital Freetown.
The Chinese embassy in the country continues to monitor the situation, said Hua Chunying, Foreign Ministry spokesperson at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.
The mudslide happened early Monday after a hillside in the Regent district of the capital gave way following a torrential rain.
Red Cross spokesman Patrick Massaquoi told AFP that 312 people were killed in the disaster, and that the death toll was expected to rise.
An estimated 2,000 people have been made homeless.
