Major League Baseball: Oakland 6 - L.A. Angels 5 (11)
[]
Over to the diamond and opening day of the new baseball season. It is also the debut of Japan's Shohei Ohtani. The newest member of the LA Angels looking to become the first player in decades to play both as a pitcher and a position player. His first action would be on the road against the Oakland A's.
His first start as a pitcher will be Sunday.
In his first at bat comes in the second inning, with his team up a run. Playing as a designated hitter -- he swings at the first pitch and grounded a hard single off Kendall Graveman for his first-ever hit.
Off to the fourth inning, and the Halos up a pair, and Kole Calhoun adds to that as he takes a pitch to left-centre. That makes it 3-buzz.
The A's climb back into the contest in the next inning, trailing 4-nothing, Khris Davis launches one into the cheap seats in centre. A 3-run bomb makes it a 4-3 game.
And the hosts don't have to wait long to tie things, as the very next batter, Matt Olson pulls one down the line in right. And it's a 4-4 game thanks to back-to-back jacks.
Next inning, and the Angels go back in front thanks to Albert Pujols, who gets all of this pitch, and that towering shot makes it 5-4.
The A's though would be frisky, like a puppy, and manufacture a run in the next inning, as Davis is at the dish again, with a couple of men on lashing one through the left side making it 5-5.
no more scoring, so we are off to extras -- and in the 11th. Marcus Semien has men on the corners, and hits it over the drawn in infield, allowing the runner to score from third. Oakland walks off 6-5 winners.
In other games, Denard Span hit a 3-run bomb to lift Tampa over Boston. Tim Anderson hit three homers as the White Sox clubbed Kansas City. The world series champion Houston Astros pick up a 4-1 win over Texas. Giancarlo Stanton hit two homers in the Yankees win. The Cubs double up Miami. And San Francisco wins a pitchers duel over the Dodgers.
