And one of the interviewees that we just saw in Liangshan has been among those legislators during this year's two sessions here in Beijing. CGTN's Tang Bo caught up with him. Carrying his proposals, the NPC deputy says roads are an integral part of poverty alleviation efforts. And they're valuable not just for getting people there but also for allowing people to move out to find new opportunities.
This is Yu Bin's second year as a deputy of the National People's Congress. He has been working hard to fight poverty in the village of Changbanqiao, in southwest China. He shows us scenes from a local tourism festival on his cellphone, part of the work done to maintain the village's poverty-fighting achievements.
YU BIN, CPC PARTY BRANCH SECRETARY CHANGBANQIAO VILLAGE, SICHUAN PROVINCE "By 2016, Changbanqiao village had already met the national standards for alleviating poverty. There were only a few farmhouse resorts in the village back in 2004. By developing tourism however, the number has come to over 80 now and their businesses are booming."
Yu says road-building has played a crucial role in fighting poverty. That's why he came to Beijing with his suggestions of building more roads and other infrastructure in remote areas. He hopes the roads can not only bring in resources but also send people out.
YU BIN, CPC PARTY BRANCH SECRETARY CHANGBANQIAO VILLAGE, SICHUAN PROVINCE "We don't think everyone should come back home and start a business, like building a farmhouse resort. It could be risky and depends on a lot of external factors such as a good location and fascinating views. Instead, we encourage our villagers to go work outside."
TANG BO BEIJING "Human resources and financial support has come from all government levels which in turn has tremendously helped improve local living standards. Therefore, the residents of Changbanqiao village have become more determined to overcome poverty. Yu Bin believes this mindset will form a virtuous circle for realizing the ultimate goal of poverty alleviation. Tang Bo, CGTN, Beijing."
