As part of Chinas coastal Fujian Province, Pingtan is the mainland's closest town to the island of Taiwan. Now, its culture and scenery has inspired a one-of-kind dance show. Last weekend, its creator - noted dancer Yang Liping - brought the production to Southwest Chinas Kunming City.
The dance show "Impressions of Pingtan," was presented in 14 scenes spread over four acts. The story chronicles the centuries-old local history of the area. Audiences got a breathtaking panorama as each act unfolded with impressive displays from the country's leading dancers. The choreography and music incorporated the customs, traditions, and dialects from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
YANG LIPING DANCE ARTIST "The story is set in the mythical times when humans and gods lived in the same world. There are Nyuwa, Mazu and Lord of the Junshan. Some of them are legendary figures. Regions like Pingtan are very rich in maritime culture. There's much folklore on both sides of the Taiwan Strait."
Apart from the traditional lion dance, puppet show, and other folk art forms, "Impressions of Pingtan" also displayed the town's island scenery and colorful costumes. The production received high praise for its strong artistic quality. By blending cultural elements from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, audiences were given a unique aesthetic experience.
ZHU FENGWEI LEAD DANCER "The plot follows the change from peace to war and then back to tranquility. It's as dramatic as the ocean waves. Even after the storm, it will return to calm."
SHUI YUE LEAD DANCER "I am impressed by the show's grandeur and magnificence. At the same time, it's very real. You can feel many things from our daily experiences."
The dance show also used the latest stage technology. Holographic projections rendered a life-like scenery. After its run in Kunming, "Impressions of Pingtan" will tour other major Chinese cities. It expects to run for 150 performances over the next two years.
