Fanzara in southern Spain is a village transformed.
Striking colourful art murals light up the various buildings that house the 320 inhabitants. The village has become an open-air urban art museum.
A decade ago, the village was divided over a proposal to locate a landfill rubbish dump nearby.
“The village was torn apart so we looked for something that would find some common ground, something that all residents would be in favor of, and that project has brought back a certain sense of harmony and normality,” Javier Lopez, the president of the Miau Association, said.
From the first free art festival in 2014, there are now more than 100 murals splashed across various buildings here.
The mayor of Fanfare, Ana Maria Pastor said that, ”I think there’s a future here. Art inspires art, and this village serves as an example of how a series of artworks can be created and multiplied."
