Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged views on regional and international issues, particularly the situation in Syria and the implementation of Iran's 2015 nuclear deal in a phone call conversation on Monday.
According to Iran Press TV, both Rouhani and Putin agreed to "bring stability to Syria" and make efforts to end armed conflict in the war-torn country.
Both Iran and Russia deployed military personnel to fight terrorism in Syria last year. After US President Donald Trump signed the new sanctions over Russia and Iran, the two countries' state media said their countries vowed to enhance their already-deep military cooperation.

The two leaders also emphasized the need to increase bilateral relations especially in economic cooperation.
"Tehran welcomes active presence of Russian investors and private sector in implementation of important infrastructural projects, including in such sectors as industry and energy,” Rouhani said.
The Russian president, for his part, said his country’s economic leaders and investors were keen to participate in Iran’s infrastructural projects and called for the implementation of agreements previously signed between the two countries.

In terms of the landmark nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached in 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC): the US, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany, Putin noted that Iran had verified its compliance with JCPOA and emphasized that a violation of the deal by any side would mean the violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
Under the UNSC resolution, the UN should remove past sanctions on Iran. However, the US imposed a series of new sanctions targeting Iran after President Trump took office, which Iran takes as a violation of the UNSC resolution.
Rouhani also warned the US on Tuesday that Iran could easily quit the JCPOA within hours if the US keeps adding sanctions.
