Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has apologized after the finance ministry admitted it had altered documents related to an alleged cronyism scandal.
In a statement on Monday, Abe said he felt responsible for the current situation. Reuters reports that references to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, his wife, and the finance minister were removed from the files -- raising concerns of a possible cover-up.
The Prime Minister is facing mounting pressure over the sale of state-owned land to a supporter at a price well below market value.
Abe has repeatedly denied the allegations. Japan's Finance Minister Taro Aso also apologized for what he called a "regrettable" situation but said he does not intend to resign.
