Two police officers were injured on Friday night outside Buckingham Place while arresting a man with a "large knife."
The man, said to be in his early-twenties, was on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault, according to the police.
The Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command are now investigating the case, as the man had been arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000.
The incident took place at around 8:35 p.m. local time (1935 GMT) outside the Mall roundabout near Spur Road when the man stopped his car near the police and got arrested after a "large knife" was spotted in his car.
The motive of the assault remains unclear at this stage.
No members of the royal family were in Buckingham Palace at the time.
