A desperate man attempted to jump from a 60-meter-high chimney, but fainted from the black smoke bellowing out of the structure in Yongzhou city of Hunan Province last Thursday. Firefighters rushed to the scene to carry out a rescue. The man was successfully saved and sent to hospital. He claimed he wanted to kill himself because of a quarrel with a workmate. According to The Economist, China had one of the highest suicide rates in the world in the 1990s. But a 2014 report from the University of Hong Kong found that suicides in China have now dropped dramatically to among the lowest levels in the world.
