Today also marks the 73rd Liberation Day for the Korean Peninsula. South Korea's President Moon Jae-in is hopeful, his planned third summit with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un will provide what he describes as an 'audacious step' towards denuclearisation. And an official end to the Korean War. CGTN's Jack Barton reports from Seoul.
Speaking at an event marking the 73rd anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese rule President Moon Jae-in said his upcoming summit with Kim Jong Un would seek to fast-track agreements struck at their Panmunjom Truce Village meeting in April.
MOON JAE-IN SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT "I will be visiting Pyongyang next month, bearing the wishes of the people. We two leaders, will confirm the implementation of the Panmunjom Declaration and take an audacious step to proceed toward the declaration of an end to the Korean War and the signing of a peace treaty, as well as the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula."
As part of that agreement Moon said he hoped rail networks and roads between the Koreas could be re-connected by the end of the year, proposing an East Asia railroad community. The upcoming third summit comes amid a growing diplomatic impasse between Pyongyang, which has allegedly not begun to dismantle or even halt the production of nuclear tipped missiles, and Washington, which is keeping tough sanctions in place.
On Wednesday President Moon said he hoped for speedy progress in talks between Pyongyang and Washington on denuclearisation, but Moon said it was ultimately up to the two Koreas to maintain positive momentum.
MOON JAE-IN SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT "I believe in the importance of recognising ourselves as the main actors when it comes to dealing with Korean Peninsula-related issues. Developments in inter-Korean relations are not the results of the side-effects of progress in the relationship between the North and the US. It is rather the advancement in inter-Korean relations that acts as the main driving force leading towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula."
JACK BARTON SEOUL "The U.S. and the D.P.R.K. held talks at the demilitarized zone over the weekend, with diplomatic sources reported as saying U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo might also make his fourth trip to Pyongyang soon. Jack Barton, CGTN, Seoul."
