Syria Conflict: Pro-government forces enter Afrin to support Kurdish fighters
[]
The crisis in Northern Syria continues to escalate. The pro-government "Popular Forces" entered Afrin yesterday, to support Kurdish fighters who hold the region, against military offensives by Turkey.
Turkish forces attacked with mortar and rockets. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this was a "warning", and threatened to confront Syrian government forces if they intervened. He said the convoy of Syrian fighters was made up of "terrorists" acting independently, and said Turkish troops will besiege the Afrin area in the next few days. Turkey launched this military operation a month ago to clear border areas in Syria of Kurdish YPG-militia, whom it views as terrorists.
