China is among the countries where the fight against TB is a high priority. It has one of the world's highest rates of new cases. But progress is being made in bringing that number down. CGTN's Natalie Pang has the details.
China remains a global leader in the fight against TB. New cases in China accounted for an estimated 9% of the world's total last year, making it second only to India. In China, an average 100 people die of TB daily. On top of that, many of China's TB cases are drug-resistant, meaning victims require longer treatment. Despite the challenges, China's TB incidence rate continues to fall, to now 3 percent, faster than the world average.
FABIO SCANO, COORDINATOR DISEASE CONTROL, WHO CHINA OFFICE "I think China has a major commitment to the global sustainable goals, TB is one, the target is one of the global sustainable goals. We will need the commitment to be translated into actions. From now to 2030, the sooner it happens, the better."
The fight against TB is a race, the disease evolves as new treatments emerge, so countries have to take immediate actions to run faster than the disease. Natalie Pang, CGTN.
