Responses to China's annual government work report

China's government work report explained recent achievements and set out goals for the coming year. Delivered by Premier Li Keqiang on Monday morning, the report received wide attention and drew a variety of responses.

For the Center for China and Globalization, a Beijing-based think tank, the report offers clues to the country's development.

Tang Beijie, the deputy secretary-general of the center, said she was most impressed by China’s development – especially over the past five years – and she hopes to see more, given the fact that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up.

Miao Lu, vice president and co-founder of the think tank, was optimistic about China’s GDP growth target of around 6.5 percent for 2018.

She said that to realize that, besides deepening reform, China should also increase its understanding of, and have better exchanges with the international community to attract more investment and talent.

Gao Chao and Li Yunping, both lawyers from a law firm in Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong Province, said that what impressed them most was its emphasis on the law and education.

"As a lawyer, I'm quite inspired by the content of advancing law-based administration. Only through that can we raise people's legal consciousness and improve the effectiveness of administrative management,” Gao said.

Li Yunping said he is from a rural family and cares about education. He was happy to see that education expenditure makes up more than four percent of GDP, and over 3.6 million students in rural areas have benefited from a nutrition improvement program.

In the southwestern city of Chengdu, Song Wanqing, an educator, watched the annual report on her mobile phone.

She said that Premier Li pointed out in the government work report that the country plans to narrow the urban-rural gap in educational standards. As an educator, she thinks it’s a worthy effort and she wants to be part of that cause.

Wang Lu, who owns a startup in Chengdu, took notes of what might affect his industry.

"The work report says the country plans to further develop its tech and innovation industry. The market has already made remarkable progress. But lately, I’ve noticed a downturn. In a way, I think it’s market selection. The market is becoming more regulated,” he said.

Wang hopes government policies could further encourage innovation and help really good companies and projects thrive.

The work report will now be subject to review by the National People's Congress.

It will be finalized when the annual session concludes on March 20, with its commitments set to be accomplished in 2018 and the years ahead.
