The families of the victims of the Lion Air Flight 610 crash are seeking justice in Indonesia. Families of 24 victims are suing Boeing over its lack of safety procedures for the 737 jets. CGTN's Silkina Ahluwalia has more from Jakarta.
Mark Lindquist is one of the lawyers representing the Indonesian families that are suing Boeing for the crash of Lion Air Flight 610.
Back in March, families of 17 victims filed the lawsuit, but now a total of 24 families have joined to take legal action.
The complaint alleges that equipment on the Boeing jet failed and the company did not inform pilots about the potential dangers of the new software on the aircraft called the MCAS, highlighting that Boeing concealed that new system to boost sales.
MARK LINDQUIST LAWYER, HERRMANN LAW GROUP "Prior to the 737 Max planes, the 737 series actually has a great safety record. But the new jets have the MCAS system which essentially forces the plane to dive down. Our firm in Seattle Herrmann Law Group has put right into our lawsuit that we are reserving the right to sue the Federal Aviation Administration for certifying this plane. This plane was not safe and it should not have been certified."
Engki Bocana is one of the family members seeking justice. He lost his 24-year-old nephew, Tami Julian, in the deadly crash. Tami was stationed in Pangkal Pinang as a telecommunications employee and was visiting his parents in Jakarta for the weekend.
ENGKI BOCANA VICTIM'S UNCLE "No amount of money can bring my family back. After the authorities officially stopped the search on the 13th day, some of the victim's families gathered to carry out our own independent search. We hired boats and divers that cost up to 10 thousand dollars a day. We just want this issue to be taken seriously so a similar incident won't happen again in the future."
Engki is now part of a group of families that have come together during this tough time providing constant support and encouragement to one another.
SILKINA AHLUWALIA JAKARTA, INDONESIA "Under the Indonesian law, Lion Air was already required to pay more than 90,000 US Dollars per family. But this lawsuit against Boeing is more focused on seeking justice and creating safer skies for all. Silkina Ahluwalia, CGTN, Jakarta."
