China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi has wrapped up his two-day visit to Washington DC. His tour ended with meetings at the White House with US President Trump and other top officials. The Chinese Foreign Ministry says that during his meetings Yang stressed the consensus that President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump had reached, during Trump's state visit to Beijing in November last year. CGTN's Nathan King has this report from Washington.
NATHAN KING WASHINGTON Yang Jiechi met with U.S. President Donald Trump, his son in law and close adviser Jared Kushner and U.S. National Security Adviser HR McMaster at the White House.
Despite tensions between the U.S. and China, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Yang stressed the consensus both countries had achieved in Beijing and emphasized the quote: Extensive common interest and responsibility in maintaining world peace, stability and prosperity and China and U.S. relations have a great global impact.
The meetings Friday at the White House followed meetings and a lunch with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Thursday.
The visit of course comes as trade tensions are on the rise after the U.S. imposed tariffs on solar panels. The U.S. is also mulling tariffs on steel and aluminum imports? And taking action over technology transfers and intellectual property.
The U.S. has also recently labelled China as a strategic rival.
During his meeting with U.S. President Trump, Yang Jeichi also talked of enhancing cooperation over the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry President Trump said the U.S. is willing to work with China to achieve a more positive development in China-US relations.
The U.S. and China have committed to holding their important high level diplomatic and security dialogue in the first half of this year. Nathan King CGTN. Washington.
