Some four thousand swimming enthusiasts are taking the plunge to cross what's known as China's Mother River. It's all happening at the 24th Sanmenxia Yellow River Culture and Tourism Festival, in central China's Henan Province. Liu Xinqing reports.
It's the largest crowd ever in Sanmenxia to swim across the Yellow River. More than 4,000 swimmers are challenging the turbulent current.
HE LIMING SWIMMER "This is my first year at the 'Swimming Across the Yellow River' activity. I wanted to do it last year, but couldn't register because there were too many candidates."
SU FENG SWIMMER "I swim frequently, and I did a lot of winter swimming in Harbin last winter. I seldom miss big events like this one."
MA RENWEI SWIMMER "Swimming keeps me strong, helps me build up my body, and is also a good way to keep young."
The Yellow River Swim is an annual event held in Sanmenxia, which sits on the southern bank of the river. Every year, the city welcomes a large crowd of swimmers from around the country for the event.
LIU XINQING SANMENXIA, HENAN "For thousands of years, Chinese people have been trying to tame the mighty Yellow River. Today, thousands of swimmers are gathering here in Sanmenxia to show reverence to the Mother River in their own way."
SU FENG SWIMMER "Most people will feel afraid when swimming in rivers, especially during the winter. This is a big challenge, but that's the way of life. We must stand up to challenges in life."
It's a massive public event that requires a massive response in case of emergency. Security measures are in place all around, from the air, on the ground and in the water.
XU WENLONG HEAD OF RESCUE TEAM "We have organized speedboats, rescue vessels and steam boats to ensure the safety of the swimmers. We also have more than 200 lifeguards on stand by at the swimming area to provide help at any time."
As Chinese become more health conscious, more and more people are turning to swimming for recreation and sport. It's a great opportunity to get close to nature. Everyone is cheerful and full of confidence.
Keep fit and keep happy - the perfect slogan for this event. Liu Xinqing, CGTN, Sanmenxia, Henan Province.
