The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has proposed several amendments to the national constitution for the first time in 14 years. The proposals include removing the two-term limit for the president and vice-president. They also suggest the inclusion in the Constitution of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the Scientific Outlook on Development, and an oversight commission as a new state organ.
The commission would be made up of national and local institutions and will independently exercise the power of supervision. The committee also proposed a revised oath of allegiance to the Constitution and suggested writing in the terms "the CPC leadership", "core socialist values" and "a community with a shared future for humanity".
China's first Constitution went into force in 1954. The Fifth National People's Congress adopted the present Constitution in 1982. It's been amended four times: in 1988, 1993, 1999 and 2004. President Xi Jinping has stressed the importance of the Constitution, saying its development has showed that establishing and implementing the Constitution were essential to building a strong and prosperous country.
