In Italy the body of former Fiorentina captain Davide Astori has been laid to rest. The 31-year-old died in his sleep Sunday before his team's match with Udinese. He was remembered at a ceremony Thursday as thousands of fans, and dozens of players turned out to say goodbye.
A service was held in Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, and the square was packed with fans as Astori's casket arrived. The entire Fiorentina team was at the funeral, along with other prominent Italian players, including legendary Juventus goalkeeper Gianliuigi Buffon, Juve defender Giorgio Chiellini and Roma striker Francesco Totti. His sudden death after a sudden illness sent shockwaves through football. The club retired Astori's number 13 shirt as a sign of respect. Astori made 289 Serie A appearances and played 14 times for the national team. Florence's city government declared Thursday a day of mourning.
