A woman was run over when a car that was parked on an incline suddenly slipped backwards in a district of Dalian city, northeast China’s Liaoning Province, last Friday afternoon.
The driver of the vehicle opened and closed the door quickly, but didn’t start the car. She was said to be shocked, but managed to call the police. Several passersby rushed to the rescue, pushing the car together to free the woman trapped underneath. To prevent the vehicle from slipping further, they continued to hold the car and some even laid quilts under the wheels.
Traffic police and an ambulance then arrived, and the victim was taken to hospital. The woman suffered broken ribs and cuts and bruises, and required hospitalization. Local police are investigating whether the accident was caused by brake failure.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 700 people are killed in road accidents across China every day. Traffic accidents claim about 260,000 lives on the mainland each year, of which 60 percent are pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
