Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is warning there can be no winners in a trade war. He made the remark just hours after new US tariffs on Chinese goods kicked in with Beijing retaliating immediately. China's Foreign Ministry also called for all sides to work together to resolve trade issues. Our reporter Meng Qingsheng has more.
MENG QINGSHENG BEIJING "The 25-percent additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese products worth 34 billion U.S. dollars go into effect today. The Chinese Foreign Ministry told a press briefing that China does not want to see trade frictions escalate but the US action is a violation of World Trade Organization rules. Ministry spokesman Lu Kang says this will hamper the global economic recovery, trigger global market turmoil and deal a blow to companies and consumers."
LU KANG, SPOKESPERSON CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "After the US unfairly raised tariffs against China, China immediately put into effect raised tariffs on some US goods. China will report to the WTO and protect the free multilateral trading system with other countries. We never wanted to see trade frictions escalate into a trade war. China hopes that all parties involved could view globalization objectively and work together to solve trade issues."
MENG QINGSHENG BEIJING "Lu Kang says China always opposes unilateralism and trade protectionism. It has been trying hard to resolve trade disputes in an objective and rational manner."
