And from the rabbit hole to the diamond capital of the world. The Belgium city of Antwerp is now the proud owner of an all-new uber bling diamond museum. The city just celebrated the 570th year of its diamond trade, a business that started in 1447 and is still thriving today. Qi Jie has this story.
A 19th century tiara with rose-cut diamonds on display at the DIVA Antwerp Home of Diamonds Museum that has just opened its doors to the world.
After more than two years of renovations, the new museum joins together the collections of the former Diamond and Silver museums of Antwerp.
Its sparkling collection includes 600 pieces all set behind sturdy glass cabinets. The museum director tells us why Antwerp is the undisputed diamond capital of the world.
JEROEN MARTENS, DIRECTOR DIVA ANTWERP HOME OF DIAMONDS MUSEUM "Eighty percent of rough stones passes Antwerp, 50 percent of cut diamonds passes through Antwerp. So essentially 50 percent of the world production in diamonds passes through Antwerp two times. So it was really important for us to have a diamond museum in Antwerp because also tourists ask for it. And I think for the tourism it's very important that there is an answer to the question 'Why is Antwerp the diamond capital in the world?"
And although D stands for diamonds, DIVA stands for just that.
ROMY COCKX, CURATOR DIVA ANTWERP HOME OF DIAMONDS MUSEUM "We also want to give people the feeling they can be a diva themselves here in the museum; and, like, experience the luxury and the beautiful objects, but also all the history behind it."
And you don't get much more diva than these diamond encrusted boots, just an example of the masterful work of diamond manufacturers in Antwerp. Together with dealers, traders and wholesalers – all concentrated in the Diamond District – they contribute to making Antwerp a diamond center of international fame. The city is also home to financial institutions, shipping and insurance companies, logistics providers and gem labs whose work is jointly connected to the diamond business.
ROMY COCKX, CURATOR DIVA ANTWERP HOME OF DIAMONDS MUSEUM "You have the rich history that you can see here and experience and feel the atmosphere that is around diamonds, this luxury feel. But we also really explain how a diamond is cut, what kind of cuts there are in history but also today."
No diamond museum could avoid the issue of blood diamonds - and here in the Vault Room questions about diamond authenticity, transparency and ethics are addressed. It's all part of DIVA's effort to show as many aspects as possible of a diamond's journey from the mines to the jewellery box. QIJIE, CGTN.
