Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to lead the country for a fifth consecutive term - as final votes in the country's general election are tallied. The new government is considered the most right-wing coalition in Israel's history - all while Netanyahu faces an impending indictment. CGTN's Stephanie Freid has the latest.
YAIR LAPID BLUE AND WHITE PARTY LEADER "I'm informing Likud, Netanyahu, and the coalition up front: We are going to make your lives tough."
Blue & White's concession speech. A warning of the party's impending stance from their opposition position in Israel's 21st parliament. The Israel general election final, official results are pending. But it's a foregone conclusion that Prime Minister Netanyahu will form the next coalition. That coalition, made up of religious and right wing parties, will be the farthest right in Israel's history.
STEPHANIE FREID TEL AVIV "Israel's new government will be characterized by parties opposed to Palestinian statehood and advocating settlement of occupied Palestinian land. Some government members may also be appointed based on their support for legal measures that will shield Netanyahu from possible pending criminal charges."
The attorney general is expected to hand down an indictment against the Prime Minister within the coming months - Netanyahu is vigorously advocating for immunity.
BRADLEY BURSTON HAARETZ POLITICAL ANALYST "A law that would make it easy for members of Knesset to veto a decision by the supreme court. That would essentially neutralize the supreme court as a force for democracy, as a force to curb military excesses, as a force to curb the government."
Final voting results are expected on Friday. A new government will be announced in about one month. Stephanie Freid, CGTN, Tel Aviv.
