The construction for China's first private commercial quantum communication network has been completed in eastern Shandong Province, local government said Tuesday.
The network is exclusively for 242 Communist Party of China and government users in the provincial capital of Jinan. Hundreds of pieces of equipment connected by hundreds of kilometers of fiber optics were installed within five months.
Based on decoy-state quantum key distribution and trusted relay groups, the network provides secure telephone and data communication services.

This marks a world-class milestone in the development of quantum technology, and identifies China as one of the world leaders in the field.
The project uses the city of Jinan as a quantum computer hub that boosts the Beijing-Shanghai quantum network due to its central geographical position between the two metropolises.
Specifically, the network alerts both users to any tampering with the system — as it alters the information being relayed. The disturbance is instantly recognizable and both parties involved can immediately identify when something is amiss.
