And now for the latest international acknowledgement of the One China Policy. China and Burkina Faso have resumed diplomatic ties. It comes just two days after the west African nation cut ties with Taiwan. CGTN's Zhao Yunfei reports.
One more country has joined the "big family" of China-Africa friendly cooperation as China and Burkina Faso have officially resumed diplomatic ties.
A communique was signed by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Burkina Faso Foreign Minister Alpha Barry. The communique reads that the two countries recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level.
WANG YI FOREIGN MINISTER OF CHINA "The cooperation between the two nations is about to begin. We want to find the things we’ve lost over the past 20 years. Minister Barry and I agreed that we should consistently increase mutual political trust, and push forward friendship, communication, and cooperation in all fields."
Bukina Faso cut ties with Beijing in 1994, and then built so-called diplomatic relations with China's Taiwan region. Minister Barry says the resumption of the ties with China fulfills the will of its people.
ALPHA BARRY FOREIGN MINISTER OF BURKINA FASO "Today is a historical day and a memorable one. It is the day of the reunion of the people of the two nations."
ZHAO YUNFEI BEIJING "The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution 2758 in 1971, which specified that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government that represents China. Therefore, the one-China policy is the prerequisite and political foundation for China and other countries to engage in friendly cooperation."
Burkina Fasoannouncese that it will sever so-called diplomatic ties with Taiwan on Thursday. China praised the decision, saying that the one-China policy is the universal consensus of the international community.
Located in West Africa, Burkina Faso has a population of 18.6 million. Cooperation between the two nations lies ahead. Beijing will host the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September. Wang Yi says the event will bring a new upsurge of cooperation between China and Africa. Zhao Yunfei, CGTN, Beijing.
