The Lancang-Mekong River serves as a large conduit for trade between China and its neighbors, and also a hotbed of human trafficking, drug trade and other forms of crime. The joint patrol started in 2011 to tackle safety concerns after a gang hijacked two cargo ships and killed 13 Chinese sailors in Thai waters.
