Since 2004, Pakistan's Balochistan province had been roiled by a separatist insurgency aimed at seeking greater control over the province's resources. Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan, and also the poorest, by per capita income. But the China-Pakistan economic corridor has brought new hope. Our correspondent Danial Khan spoke to some locals in the port of Gwadar, for this report.
Gwadar port is the nucleus of the multibillion dollar project, and is dubbed to becoming the hub of regional trade. But with hope comes uncertainty. Gwadar is mainly a fisherfolk community and the life of the people depends on their day to day catch.
For the locals, this sudden development has mounted fears, coupled with rumors that they might be uprooted and relocated once trade activity begins. Rasool Baksh, the leader of the fisherman forum is apprehensive about the project.
RASOOL BAKSH LEADER, GWADAR FISHERMAN FORUM "The last government did not care about us, they told us that they will take our homes, where will we go? It's good that CPEC will benefit Pakistan, but what about us? We don't have basic necessities of life, we don't have water or electricity. I hope the new government and people related to CPEC will fulfill our demands."
But the Chief of the China overseas port holding company, that is now running the port says, the Chinese company has taken the locals onboard.
ZHANG BAOZHONG CHAIRMAN & CEO, CHINA OVERSEAS PORT HOLDING COMPANY "As what Mr. Xi Jinping, the president of China said that all the people shall benefit from CPEC, we are following exactly what our leaders request us, and I'm very happy to inform you that since the operation of COPHC in Gwadar, we have offered more than 2,000 jobs to the local people, and majority of the senior positions like marketing manager, finance manager, human resource manager are taken by the local people."
A state of the art school, vocational training institute, 50-bed hospital and recruitment of a considerable number of locals in ongoing development projects are the benefits being offered to around twenty six hundred thousand people of Gwadar. Mubarak, who I met 2 years ago in Gwadar, works for the China Overseas Port Holding Company. He says the locals are expecting too much from CPEC, too soon.
MUBARAK EMPLOYEE, CHINA OVERSEAS PORT HOLDING COMPANY "This education institute started with 150 students now it is educating over 500 students, it was built by the Chinese government, with support from the Pakistan education department, they have also built one hospital. CPEC is a big project, it will take time, we can't say that tomorrow we will develop everything, and so we cannot say they are not doing anything."
CPEC is already creating opportunities for young Pakistanis, especially the locals of Gwadar, who have remained mired in a trap of poverty and depravation for decades.
DANIAL KHAN GWADAR "With rapid developments on the ground in Gwadar, the life of locals is turning around towards progress and prosperity with new infrastructure developments, employment opportunities and health and education facilities. Many believe that the China Pakistan economic corridor is indeed becoming a game changer in the region. Danial Khan, CGTN, Gwadar.
