A record-breaking heatwave has affected many parts of China and forced authorities to issue alerts. They warn the heat is creeping from northern China to central and eastern parts of the country.
More than 30 counties and cities covering an area of 3.64 million square meters have reported their highest temperatures ever. The temperature has risen as high as 42 degrees Celsius in parts of Hebei Province, Shaanxi Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In the capital Beijing, electricity consumption has also hit new heights, with air-conditioning eating up 52 percent of all usage.
Firefighting brigades are working to prevent fires by removing hazards. The public is warned to protect themselves and take precautions against the heat.
