We begin here in Beijing, where the 1000-day countdown to the 2022 Winter Olympics was marked with the installation of an LED screen on the Ling Long Tower near the Bird's Nest National Stadium, which will tick down the remaining time to the Opening Ceremony.
Following performances by athletes and volunteers, Beijing mayor Chen Jining discussed the preparations, and announced that venue construction is proceeding very quickly. The leader of the host city added that the organizers are stepping up their cooperation with the International Olympic Committee, in an effort to further improve the process.
The LED screen was turned on at exactly 8:00 PM, displaying the official emblem of the 2022 Winter Games, as well as the amount of time left until the Opening Ceremony at the Bird's Nest. The 132-meter tall Ling Long Tower, whose design imitates a pagoda, was part of the International Broadcasting Center during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
The organizers also released their Volunteer Action Plan, which calls on China's friends around the world to join the host nation's drive to recruit 27,000 volunteers for the Winter Olympics, and 12,000 for the Paralympics.
