The government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has kept up an extensive program to alleviate poverty and improve people’s living conditions.
Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said public spending on social welfare witnessed a 71 percent jump over the past five years. Meanwhile 10 percent of workers with the lowest incomes have seen their salaries climb around 46 percent.
Hong Kong newspaper Ta Kung Pao reported that the number of people employed hit 3.82 million in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 40,000 year on year. And the under-employment rate tumbled slightly by 0.3 percent to 1.2 percent. As a major financial and trade hub, Hong Kong had around 600,000 foreign workers as of 2015.
