The Chinese Foreign Ministry says Beijing holds the historic meeting between Moon and Kim in high regards. CGTN's Meng Qingsheng reports.
MENG QINGSHENG BEIJING China has hailed the historic meeting between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un in the border village of Panmunjom on Friday morning. The Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a regular press that China hopes the meeting results in a positive outcome.
HUA CHUNYING CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON "We applaud the two leaders' historic step and appreciate their political decisions and courage. We hope this meeting will yield positive outcomes. As a Chinese poem says: 'We remain brothers after all the ups and downs; let's forgo our old grudges, smiling we will meet again.' We hope and look forward to them taking this opportunity to further open a new journey of long-term stability on the peninsula."
MENG QINGSHENG BEIJING On Thursday, Hua told the media China is rooting for the success of the historic summit and wants to see more good news come out of the Korean Peninsula. The spokesperson said China wants all parties involved to get on the right path to lasting peace on the Peninsula. The foreign ministry has also weighed in on the possibility of a peace treaty between Seoul and Pyongyang. Hua said China supports the goal of a peace treaty and efforts to establish a peace mechanism for the Peninsula. She said China believes progress in denuclearization and establishing a peace settlement are effective ways to fundamentally resolve the Korean Peninsula issue.
