South Africa Politics: New president faces stagnant economy, unemployment and drought
[]
Ramaphosa face's serious national problems as his presidency begins. Let's take a look at some of them.
A stagnating economy with anaemic growth of less than one percent is expected in 2018. And unemployment, dropped one percent in the last quarter of 2017, is still high at 26%.
DONNA NEMER, DIRECTOR CAPITAL MARKETS, JSE "There still is a long-term structural issue that the economy needs to have addressed. Of course the capital position of the state owned enterprises, the need for growth, the importance of poverty alleviation and finding a better way to have all South Africans benefit from growth."
As President Ramaphosa enters his so-called honeymoon period, he needs to prioritize what actions he will take, what issues he will address first.
There is also a drought to contend with. A national disaster declaration has been made. And Cape Town is among the worst affected areas. The agricultural sector has already lost over $1 billion.
ZAK SCHULTZ MICRO HERB FARMER "A lot of the guys over here, are actually crying because the water table levels are low, dams are not keeping up, so you have to cut down, for example, if you were farming 300 hectors, you don't have the water for 300 hectares, now you have to cut down to 150 and that at the end of the day, there is staff, if you can't produce, how do you keep the same amount of staff."
There is hope that the 4th of June, when the rainy season is set to get underway, will bring relief. And the country hopes Ramaphosa will bring relief on other fronts as well.
