China's Pork Supply: Government responds to high pork prices around country
Updated 12:20, 12-Sep-2019
The Chinese government has responded to the high cost of pork around the country. In a bid to stabilize the situation, it said it would offer subsidies to support large pig farms, and strengthen the industry's capacity to deal with epidemics. It said it would invest more in hog production and transportation. It comes as the country's pig supply shrunk substantially due to multiple factors -- including an outbreak of African swine fever and higher breeding costs -- all of which pushed up the price of pork. One government official said the measures should be enough to resolve the problem.
