To Egypt now, where President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has ordered the Rafah border with Gaza remain open for the entirety of Ramadan. The decision comes after scores of Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces last Monday, during mass protests on the Gaza border with Israel. Keeping the Rafah border open is to ensure the wounded get proper care. Our correspondent Yasser Hakim looks at the significance of the border crossing to the Palestinian people, and for Israel.
The Rafah border crossing is the only access for Gaza to the outside world. The others only lead into Israel which has imposed a blockade on Gaza for years. Egypt opens the border for a few days every once in a while. Usually, the ones allowed through are medical cases, students who study abroad and expats.
RANA USAMA POLITICAL EDITOR, ONA "The border crossing witnessed terrorist attacks before and infiltration of militants, weapons, and drugs from the other side. So there was always a concern to keep it open permanently. After the reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah sponsored by Egypt in October 2017, the Palestinian authority took control of the Palestinian side of Rafah which lessened Egypt's fears a bit"
The attacks by Israeli forces in Gaza which led to the killing of nearly eighty demonstrators this week has prompted Cairo to open the Rafah crossing for two days. The injured have been sent for treatment in Egyptian hospitals and all form of aid was being delivered into the enclave. However, in a tweet Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah El Sisi announced the good news that the border will open throughout the holy month of Ramadan.
RANA USAMA POLITICAL EDITOR, ONA "Since it was opened in the first few days, four huge trucks carrying 5 tonnes of medical aid were sent in for the hospitals, in addition to tonnes of food and seven trucks of diesel and 35 trucks carrying cement and building material. Meanwhile, El Arish, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweyad border areas were put on high alert"
Hamas leader Ismael Haniyah was in Cairo a day before the clashes to coordinate with the Egyptian side the security procedures for the opening of the border.
YASSER HAKIM CAIRO, EGYPT "The Palestinians have thanked the Egyptian president for opening the Rafah border for a month. They hope it could be opened permanently, but Egypt has made it clear this can only happen once it guarantees there will be no more militant infiltration from Gaza. Yasser Hakim CGTN Cairo."
