A Peruvian judge has ordered the country’s former president, Ollanta Humala, and his wife, Nadine Heredia, to be jailed for up to 18 months.
The ruling comes while prosecutors prepare money laundering charges against the couple.
The judge ruled in favor of a request by a prosecutor who argued that the couple should be jailed to prevent them from fleeing or interfering with his investigation, which has lasted nearly three years.
The two are accused of taking illegally obtained funds from the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, and two Brazilian construction companies.
The couple's lawyer said the two deny any wrongdoing, but were on their way to turning themselves in.
