And young Chinese are turning away from marriage. The country witnessed its third year of decline in the number of newly registered unions, with a 7-percent drop from 2016, a 6-percent drop from 2015, and a some 3-percent drop from 2014. And among married couples, fewer and fewer of them desire to have children. Last year there were about 17.2 million births, down by about 630-thousand in 2016. Despite the two-child policy, most couples aren't willing to have a second child. One survey showed some 58 percent of couples want to have two children, but only 10 percent of the families in Beijing actually have two.
