Egypt and Jordan have jointly condemned Israel's latest attack against Palestinians, who were commemorating their 42nd Land Day. In a joint news conference held in Cairo, the two countries' Foreign Affairs ministers stressed the recent developments harm all hopes for peace. Meanwhile the Arab League has urged Israel to stop attacks on Palestinian protesters. CGTN's Adel EL Mahrouky has more.
The League of Arab States says Israel has brutally attacked peaceful Palestinian protesters and has called the international community to protect Palestinians.
Leaders of the Arab world have a scheduled summit in Saudi Arabia by mid April that was going to discuss the possible resumption of peace talks, that may no longer be their main concern.
Meanwhile member states have joined the pan Arab organizations in condemning Israel's latest attack.
In Cairo Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, have warned about the serious implications the recent violence could have on the peace process.
AYMAN SAFADI JORDANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER "The situation is very difficult. There are no signs or any indications that refer to any hope for peace or an acceptable solution. That's the problem. We want eternal and comprehensive peace. That must be through a Palestinian state. There must be hope that this oppression against the Palestinians will end. If it continues the whole region could explode. Palestinians must have a solution that gives them hope, that gives them their right to Live."
Tension has been reemerging in Palestine since US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's Capital. Shoukry and Safadi have warned that the situation is already volatile, and if this weekend's clashes are not contained the recent efforts to revive peace may permanently fail.
AYMAN SAFADI JORDANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER "It's an unacceptable escalation in Gaza. We condemn Israel's violence against peaceful protesters and the innocent lives who went to practice their right of expression to reject the occupation. Peace is our objective. But peace won't be achieved through oppression or murder."
SAMEH SHOUKRY EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTER "Regardless to the recent developments our joint Arab committee is working to resolve the Jerusalem issue. We seek to implement the Security Council resolutions for Jerusalem. These are legitimate Palestinian rights in the city of Jerusalem. The world must move to establish a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital."
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO "Escalations in the Palestinian occupied territories is concerning the entire Arab World. The region has been looking forward to resuming the peace talks, instead the situation worsens. Arabs believe resolving the Palestinian crisis would bring stability to the Middle East and right now they are seeing their hopes fading away. AMA, CGTN, CA."
