China’s century-old prestigious university, Nankai University, recently had one of its innovations become a hit on Chinese social media – the dormitory for married students.
The university made the enrollment qualification for the married students dormitory public via its official website on Thursday and immediately was put under the spotlight.

Students who have been married and enrolled at this university are eligible for this kind of dormitory which is located on the Balitai and Jinnan Campuses in Tianjin City. The dormitory for couples is not in a separate block because only a few students have ever applied for it, said the university

“Though the rooms for married students are in a usual dormitory building, they are built on the same floor and same side. Each of the rooms is equipped with a double bed and closets,” the university explained to Beijing Youth Daily and asserted that these rooms will not cause any inconvenience to other students.
Application for this kind of dormitory is actually not that easy as these applicants need to submit certain documents in case some try and bluff their way out. Married students who intend to live there need to turn in their marriage certificates plus the duplicates, student ID cards (plus the duplicates) and an application form. Once the applicants are qualified, the university requires that both people check out of their previous dormitory rooms at the same time.

In fact, it is said that this kind of dormitory was launched in this university nearly three decades ago at this university’s campuses but very few students applied for it – it just caught people’s eyes this year accidentally, as the media circulated the application details and tagged the university.
Some netizens are in favor of the university’s considerate arrangement for married  couples while some students who are still single or under the country’s legal marriage age –  which is 22 years for males and 20 years for females –  joked that they had been marginalized.

“Please show respect to students who are single. OK?” @Didengshuxuexiacebanjia joked in her comment.
Some worries were also brought up by netizens in their comments.
“Is the university encouraging students to get married during their study at university?” @Mr_Xiaofengtongxue questioned the university on Weibo.
“University is for studying. Why did this university set up this dormitory?” asked @Yigemaihunantechanderen

In recent years, many of China’s universities have been trying to break from the traditional campus dormitory style in which four or more students need to share a room. A lot of universities, for example, have installed a bathroom inside dorm rooms and some even launched suites for several students, where seven to 10 students live in separate rooms and only share the living room and the bathroom.
