Meanwhile, heavy fog has disrupted ferry services in southern China's Haikou city, stranding more than 8,000 cars.

To ease the travel peak pressure and to ensure the safety of passengers, the local government in Haikou issued an emergency notice on Wednesday night, extending the Spring Festival holiday for one more day to Thursday for all except frontline public service departments.  Meanwhile, nearly 10 thousand vehicles and over 44,000 passengers traveled via Haikou city's three ports on Wednesday. But more than 10 thousand cars were still waiting in or outside the city as of Wednesday night.
