China-US Trade Tensions: China's UK Ambassador: Europe, China must unite against protectionism
[]
The Financial Times has published a letter by Chinese Ambassador to Britain Liu Xiaoming. It calls for Europe and China to unite against protectionism.
Liu stressed the importance of the World Trade Organization as a platform for trade issues. WTO members have pushed down tariffs, and trade liberalisation has become the international consensus.
Liu wrote that protectionism is a "spectre stalking the world". He listed protectionist measures conducted by the US in the past, to negative consequence, and said there is no need to repeat history. He added that there is no winner in a trade war.
Liu discussed China and UK's commitments to free trade. He wrote China reiterates its commitment to opening up on all fronts, and pointed out that the UK and Europe are advocates for the multilateral system of trade. He called on the UK, Europe and China to stand shoulder-to-shoulder to safeguard the international trade system from protectionism.
