US President Donald Trump believes the world is on the "verge of a technological revolution" that will "improve virtually every aspect" of life. Now he wants to put "America First" when it comes to Artificial Intelligence. As CGTN's Sean Callebs reports, the Trump Administration has established a new task force focused on machine learning.
SEAN CALLEBS WASHINGTON "The White House hosted a group of over 40 Silicon Valley heavy-weights, and other major business leaders in the United States in an effort to plot a course forward on American development of artificial intelligence. The Trump Administration on Thursday, announcing it is establishing a panel of federal officials to focus on AI issues, and work with the private sector in part to keep up with growing competition from China.
The meeting comes as welcome news to tech firms while many in the U.S. are urging President Donald Trump to improve his frosty relationship with the leaders of Silicon Valley. A great deal is at stake. Indeed, the future of many industries -that include driverless vehicles, -- biometric identification -and robotics. Trump ran afoul of much of the high-tech industry in the U.S. during the presidential campaign in 2016. He openly worried that robotics and artificial intelligence would cost U.S. jobs-instead campaigning on issues like making coal king again, and the importance of fossil fuels.
Trump has also been a harsh critic of Amazon, saying the company is decimating the retail industry. But recently Trump has had Silicon Valley converts. Because of the overhaul of the U.S. tax plan, Apple announced it is bringing billions of dollars back to the United States that it basically stored overseas. Apple also says it will invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S. economy in the next five years. China meanwhile, has had funding-and an artificial intelligence plan in place, and up and running. Chinese President Xi Jinping is pushing an ambitious plan, to switch China from a manufacturing hub to a nation that leads the way in technology by 2025. And, by 2030 China wants to be the recognized world leader in artificial intelligence.
SEAN CALLEBS WASHINGTON "Leaders in companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft were at the White House summit-warning if the United States doesn't keep up with China the country faces the possibility of being left behind. The administration says it is committed to AI, even if that means in the short term, U.S. jobs will be lost. Sean Callebs, CGTN, Washington."
