Iraqi government forces have launched a major operation in the Old City center of Mosul to seize ISIL's last stronghold in the city.
They hope this will be the last assault in the nine-month long campaign to retake Mosul. The troops started their push into the old city at 6 a.m. local time from three directions.
The United Nations says an estimated 100,000 civilians remain trapped in the city in harrowing conditions, with little food, water and medicine and limited access to hospitals.
