Saturday marks the Chongyang Festival, or the Double Ninth Festival in English, a traditional event celebrating the Chinese people’s wishes for a long and healthy life. The day was designated as the Senior People’s Festival in the 1980s, and was written into the Chinese law in 2012.
China has the most senior citizens in the world. By the end of 2016, the population above the age of 60 exceeded 230 million, accounting for 16.7 percent of the country’s total population, and the number is expected to peak 487 million in 2053.
However, China is also a country that strongly believes in filial piety. It is part of traditional Chinese culture’s essence. There are plenty of stories about filial piety in Chinese history, ranging from classic literature to simple anecdotes.
Even if people no longer talk about filial piety every day, it is an important part of China’s social morality.
On this special day, there are many people who stayed far away from home because of studies, work or simply striving in life. However, maybe just a small message or a phone call home to say hello to your parents or grandparents would make their day and make it the best Double Ninth Festival.
