After a year of shuttle diplomacy and multiple meetings with leaders in Middle East capitals, American envoys Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt have failed to convince Egypt or other key Arab states that the US can broker a fair solution for Israel and Palestine. CGTN's Yasser Hakim looks at why the US is losing its Arab allies.
Trump calls it the deal of the century, to create peace after decades of conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis. It's based on connecting the West Bank and Gaza Strip into a confederation state with Jordan. Most Arab countries have rejected his plan.
AMR AMMAR MIDDLE EAST POLITICS RESEARCHER "This was the main aspect of the deal of the century. Jordan king Abdullah announced there was huge political pressure on him to approve it but he turned it down. Trump's credibility has also been completely lost in the Arab world because of this and the decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem defying international law and UN resolutions 476 and 478 of 1980, that refused an Israeli law to announce Jerusalem as capital of Israel."
Meanwhile, Egypt has been actively meeting with both sides, trying to bring the Palestinians and Israelis together on the negotiating table. Some experts say Arab countries should include other powers in the equation.
AMR AMMAR MIDDLE EAST POLITICS RESEARCHER "Egypt's vision is clear. Israel should annex all land it occupied in 1967 according to UN resolution 242 and create a two state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state. The world now is becoming multipolar, the US is not the only superpower and cannot unilaterally control the Middle East conflict anymore. I expect the Eurasian powers Russia and China to interfere in the future and help in achieving peace."
While Israel has welcomed the US mediation, it has been categorically rejected from most Arab nations, making it hard to achieve peace the Trump way.
YASSER HAKIM CAIRO, EGYPT "But it's worth noting that Trump is not the first US president to fail in bringing an end to the decades-long conflict. All Trump's predecessors have fallen short as well and that's why many in the region are hoping for an alternative mediator other than the US. Yasser Hakim CGTN Cairo."
