“It’s hard to define an argument for this decision with respect to advancing the peace cause in the Middle East,” former US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CGTN’s Dialogue.
His comments come after US President Donald Trump, breaking with decades of diplomatic tradition, announced on December 6 that Washington would now recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move which sparked global condemnation and which threatens to plunge the region into chaos.
“The US’ controversial Jerusalem recognition was a political decision rather than diplomatic decision,” said Sullivan.
“It is very surprising that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is very supportive of this move when he takes responsibility to produce a peace agreement between Palestine and Israel.”
“US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has created turmoil when we don’t need that. On the other hand, I don’t believe that we were near to a peace agreement between Palestine and Israel where nether of their leaders seem prepared well for the compromise needed to make a peace deal.”
