For the first time, the Grammy Festival, a touring, world-class live music experience comes to China today.
The iconic Grammy Awards celebrates the very best in creative excellence, and are universally considered the music community's highest honor. The Grammy Festival China is the Academy's latest initiative. It will bring together Grammy-winning artists with Chinese culture to provide audiences with an unrivalled concert experience.
CGTN's Jenny Ybanez has more of the first-ever American pop-music festival in China.
JENNY YBANEZ BEIJING "It's such an exciting day especially for music fans here in China because the first 'Grammy Festival' ever is going to be held here in Beijing. Grammy- award-winning superstar, Pharrell Williams, will be performing and the line- up includes other huge international acts, OneRepublic, Carly Rae Jepsen, James Bay, Daya, Phoenix and Macy Gray. Plus, there will be performances from two mega-stars here in China - Nicholas Tse and William Chan."
The Recording Academy, known for the prestigious Grammy Awards, has joined forces with Bravo Entertainment China to provide audiences a new, world-class live music experience. And they're hoping to make this festival as big as Coachella in LA, Glastonbury in England and Brazil's Rock In Rio. CGTN was given a private viewing of Changyang Park where the festival will be held and we were given a tour of the venue, which is in the South- West of the city. It's a public holiday here, and the organizers told me they're expecting over 40 thousand people at this festival.
What you're seeing right now, hopefully, are some exclusive shots of the two Grammy Festival stages where the acts will be playing back-to-back throughout the day starting at 2pm local time. And we also got a peak of backstage and there you can see lots of tents where all the big stars will be hanging out - each equipped with air conditioners. The main act, Pharrell Williams, has 10 tents for his group and apparently has an entourage of about 50 people. And just to describe to you the scale of their productions, the band 'OneRepublic' alone, flew in 20 tons of equipment for their 70- minute- set on stage. They also have famous Chinese photographer, Chen Man, taking photos backstage. Her work includes major fashion magazine covers for Vogue, Bazaar and Grazia to name a few. If I'm not mistaken, the online sale for tickets is now over but the tickets to get in ranged from about $92 to $360 U.S. dollars per ticket. Now let me tell you more about the artists, upon their arrival they were each given a cute Panda teddy bear, as a welcome gift from the organizers. And if they haven't done so already, they've planned to visit the main historical sites such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City during their stay in Beijing.
And in regards to the future of this event, I have some news for you! I've been told by the organizers that Bravo Entertainment China have secured four more Grammy Festivals to happen in this country but are looking into different cities to host the event. So this music extravaganza today will definitely not be the first and last here in China!
