Now to the latest from a deadly gas plant explosion in Yima, in central China's Henan Province. Search and rescue has ended, and the cause is under investigation. The incident on Friday evening claimed 15 lives, and another 15 people are in critical condition. The accident has also impacted many more nearby, who're in still shock and wondering how they will rebuild their lives. CGTN's Zhao Yunfei has more from Yima.
The explosion has affected the residential buildings within a three-kilometer radius from this plant, shattering windows and breaking down doors.
MENG BO RESIDENT "The plant is in that direction. The direct distance from my home is about three-hundred to five-hundred meters."
The village where Meng lives is the closest one to the gas plant, and it was also the most severely affected.
MENG BO RESIDENT "On Friday afternoon, after I received a phone call from my wife, I hurried back home from work. You can see right now what the inside my house is like. The door was deformed and cracked. It can't be opened or closed. The house was a complete mess. The floor is full of glass. Shoes and glass are all over the floor. The damage to the windows and doors is serious. All the windows in the house, including their frames, have been broken. Things have fallen to the ground. You can see, the marble table has also been broken. Then there's the kitchen, its damage is more serious. Because the kitchen's three sides are made of glass. Right now, you can't even get into it."
In fact, most of the buildings in Meng's village were recently built. He said he and his wife, who's 6 weeks pregnant, have lived here just for one year. But the explosion has not only shattered windows but also their hopes. However Meng is not alone.
RESIDENT YIMA CITY "We just finished remodeling our home eight months ago. We moved here not long ago. All has been damaged. These are all of our possessions. I hope the government could help to restore our homes as soon as possible. I hope such accidents will not happen again. There are many chemical plants here."
RESIDENT YIMA CITY "I hope the power plant, and the gasification plant could move quickly. It can't be here. With it, there's no guarantee of human life."
According to the local environmental protection department, waste water produced by the accident and the firefighting efforts has flowed into a local river. The Yima government has built 4 dams to prevent contaminated water from flowing out. Out of water, electricity, and gas, Meng has sent his wife back to live with her family. And he doesn't know a way out. The search and rescue operation is over. But it is not the end for Yima and its people.
