In Uganda, the national women's cricket team recently won the Africa Twenty-20 Championship. This has sports authorities in the country believing their success can spur the growth of the game there, following a shock win over Zimbabwe. Leon Ssenyange reports.
Women's cricket is on the rise here. Uganda's stunning run to become African Twenty20 champions has catapulted the women's team from the backwaters to the forefront. But it's been a tale of patience and dedication.
KEVIN AWINO UGANDA CAPTAIN "We worked hard. We have been failing, but once it came into our hands, and took it with all our hands, and we are happy for it."
The success has grown inspiration among the game's admirers. Zam Nabulya only recently learnt how to bowl and bat. She hopes she will one day earn her country cricket glory.
ZAM NABULYA UGANDA ALL-ROUNDER "I am soon going to be in the national team, I have that courage, and I know I will make it."
And it is such determination that is expanding the participation gap.
LEON SSENYANGE KAMPALA "The increased appetite for the game in Uganda is encouraging more young girls to have a go at cricket. While there is more work to be done, the future of the women's game looks bright."
With many more clubs and schools now involved in cricket, Uganda's ambitions are beyond the boundaries. The national team hopes to play at the Women's World Cup in a few years' time.
MARY NANDERENGA UGANDA CRICKET ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT MANAGER "We have played the women's global qualifiers. We have seen the areas to work on and definitely this time round we have an opportunity."
Uganda is already on the path to making some big strides, after all, there is already something to be motivated about. LS, CGTN, Kampala, Uganda.
