Sun Yang, Ding Ning honored at China Laureus awards

The China Laureus Awards was held on Wednesday evening in Beijing and, once again, swimming star and three-time Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang won the top prize of best male athlete while the best female athlete title went to Olympic table tennis champion Ding Ning.
As one of the most decorated Chinese swimmers in history, Sun also won this award in 2011. He picked up a second honor Wednesday night as the most popular male athlete in 2017. Sun won the 200m and 400m freestyle events and set an Asian record in the 200m at the FINA World Championships in Budapest to bring his medals at the worlds up to 14, including 9 gold.
The best athlete on the women's side goes to Ding Ning who won the singles and doubles titles at this year's World Championships. She also finished first at the China Open and was nominated as one of the 2017 ITTF stars.

As for other awards, golf star Feng Shanshan achieved the best breakthrough after winning three LPGA tournaments this year to become the Chinese mainland's first world number one.
The best non-Olympic athlete went to Go player Ke Jie, while the best team award went to the national synchronized swimming team for their history-making performance at world championships.
The spirit award was presented to Chinese sailing pioneer Guo Chuan who has been missing since October 25 last year while attempting to break the world record for crossing the Pacific Ocean solo.
